It seems to me that perhaps the way is most narrow for those who presume it to be automatically wide and open to all, because they take God for granted, and assume that He is not terribly necessary for salvation. Also, the assumption that God is somehow required to be merciful-only lacks the humility of knowing we must repent.

The converse also seems true to me: that those who assume the narrow way are most likely to find vast mercy awaiting them, because God sees them "working out their salvation with fear and trembling."
