Wow, I sure can relate to this. I abhor small talk with every fiber of my being. I'm very introverted and I know that introverts tend to be pretty bad at small talk. On the other hand, we are very good at "big talk" - in other words, deep, in-depth conversations about things that interest us. I have no problem at all with an in-depth conversation about, say, religion, but I'm totally inept when it comes to chit-chat.

It sounds like you're probably an introvert, too. You make a good point about being content with what we have; however, if I were you I wouldn't view your introversion as a defect, as I did for years. We introverts have our own strengths, like the aforementioned facility with in-depth conversations.

(I found your blog via the HMS blog, btw).

Sorry for double posting - not sure what happened.

I feel for you. sometimes when I'm 'on', I can do it no problem but other times I get really... weird. There's no other way to describe it and so I just tend to stick with my own kind, if I can help it. :)

I sometimes wonder how many bloggers fall into this category - I know I do. It has gotten a little easier for me through more experience. I find that if I give myself little pep talks beforehand, things like "remember, listen! Don't get too passionate about something with someone you hardly know! Ask about their kids! Don't monologue! etc" things go a little bit better.

I am an introvert though, and I'm sure that is part of it. But still, what a pain!
