I wonder if anyone truly makes such sweeping changes with the kind of casual nonchalance implied by the narrative. I think as you say the calm is more retrospective than actual. As an element in the story it's really meant to convey that feeling of being at peace with the decision. If you admit to the turmoil you suggest there might be regrets and a possibility of going back. Also the sense that we shouldn't burden strangers with our drama. When you meet a stranger, you want a clean, simple story. You don't want the complexities and the messy details.
