When we drove cross-country with small children, we woke them up when we crossed the Mississippi. The Jordan River was not only the place where Elijah was assumed into heaven (Hi, John!) but was also the border between the slavery of Egypt + ennui of the desert and the Promised Land. It was Joshua (Hi, Jesus!) who led the Israelites across the Jordan from one state of being to the other. Baptism for the Christian is the transition from death to life. Jesus leads the way, "dying" in baptism and emerging to new life. Not a matter of repentance for him, but an icon of his leadership.
